The Puzzle of Disabilities & Employment

By: L. P.

There are different pieces of the puzzle with understanding disabilities within individuals; some that are easy and some that are hard.

How should someone go about understanding disability on an individual level?

The first thing to figure out the puzzle is to gather up information about both the individual and the disability. Then you can begin to see what the pieces are for the puzzle. For Example, I am a person who has three puzzle pieces. I needed a trach (which is a tube in a throat that helps to breathe) when I was younger. I no longer needed it at the age of 18 and had it removed. I am also a person with Achondroplasia - people with achondroplasia typically have short arms and legs, an enlarged head, and an average size trunk. Aside from my medical issues, I was also in special education.

I feel like people with disabilities should take the time to understand their individual puzzle pieces. Then, think about what they would like to do especially when they are at the age of looking for jobs. I personally feel when looking for a job, start with things you enjoy so that its not that hard to pick. When I was starting out in high school I was interning at a local retail store, as well as a medical center and nursing home.

Even with all the progress achieved, job candidates with disabilities are still highly overlooked. There’s a drastic difference in employment rates between people with and without disabilities, even if the former possess enough qualifications to perform the job.

To bridge that gap, below are some suggestions for high-paying jobs for individuals with impairments across various industries. The list of options will work for people with mobility difficulties and other physical disabilities.

I was once afraid to apply for a job because of Being judged on what I looked like as a little person, but I still kept applying to jobs. Then I took a break until I found the right Job Coach and the right circle to help me.

Anyone can look a job. Remember to apply to Job that also has your interest in it first.
